What is Naturopathic Medicine?

Naturopathic medicine is a distinct profession of healthcare which blends centuries-old knowledge of natural, non-toxic therapies with the current advances in the understanding of health and human systems. The emphasis is on the prevention and treatment of disease and the promotion of optimal health through the use of therapeutic methods and modalities, which help to restore and support the body's own healing ability, the Vis medicatrix naturæ.

Licensed Naturopathic Doctors (those who have graduated from 4-year, post-graduate level, federally accredited programs and have passed the National Board Exams for the Licensure of Naturopathic Physicians) are educated in the same basic and clinical sciences as MD's, as well as in holistic and natural approaches to treatment.

Naturopathic Doctors use standard medical diagnostic techniques such as detailed health history, physical examination, blood tests, radiology and other standard laboratory procedures. The scope of practice includes all aspects of family and primary care, from pediatrics to geriatrics, and all natural medicine modalities.

Natural medicine modalities which I use in treatment include the use of

  • Botanical Medicine - the medicinal use of plants and plant substances
  • Clinical Nutrition - the therapeutic use of foods, vitamins, minerals and other nutrients to biochemically correct imbalances in the body and guide toward wellness
  • Homeopathic Medicine - the energetic use of plant, animal, or mineral substances to gently stimulate a person's inherent healing ability
  • Physical Medicine - the therapeutic application of water, cold, heat and touch
  • Lifestyle Management and Counseling - promotion and maintenance of an individual's state of optimal health through stress management, behavioral modifications, various exercise methods and mind-body techniques
  • CranioSacral Therapy - a gentle, noninvasive hands-on technique, which dissipates the negative effects of stress on the central nervous system.
Treatment is selected upon the basis of patient individuality.
