Naturopathic medicine is a distinct profession of healthcare which blends centuries-old knowledge of natural, non-toxic therapies with the current advances in the understanding of health and human systems. The emphasis is on the prevention and treatment of disease and the promotion of optimal health through the use of therapeutic methods and modalities, which help to restore and support the body's own healing ability, the Vis medicatrix naturæ. Licensed Naturopathic Doctors (those who have graduated from 4-year, post-graduate level, federally accredited programs and have passed the National Board Exams for the Licensure of Naturopathic Physicians) are educated in the same basic and clinical sciences as MD's, as well as in holistic and natural approaches to treatment. Naturopathic Doctors use standard medical diagnostic techniques such as detailed health history, physical examination, blood tests, radiology and other standard laboratory procedures.
