WHAT
IS YOGA?
Yoga
is understood by many people to be a rather exotic style of physical
training with perhaps a bit of meditation. Physical training is
only one of Yoga's many forms. There is a great variety of approaches,
methods, and great number of schools. It is important not to limit
ones understanding of yoga to just one or two the better known practices.
Literally yoga means to unite depending upon the school
and it's philosophy. The meaning of to unite is interpreted
differently but the most common meaning is unification of body and
mind. Yoga is method of physical healing and spiritual development.
ZEN
YOGA
This
style of yoga emphasizes healing through movement. It is the discipline
of bringing the body to a balanced state by using a wide variety
of body postures, breathing exercises, massage and Buddhist meditation.
There are three ways in which Zen Yoga affects the body:
~Rhythmical repetition of movements develops awareness of the body
in motion
~Holding poses deeply effects internal organs
~Energetic exercises help aid the body in attaining a balanced circulation
of energy
Correct and full breathing is essential to
good health. It energizes and invigorates the body while also helping
to calm the mind.
Zen Yoga uses body movement to promote deeper and fuller respiration
and helps to develop a better awareness of correct breathing.
WHAT
IS MEDITATION?
Meditation
is a method of mental training through which we learn to attend
to the present, here and now. Our minds are continually looking
to what has been or what could be but we are rarely in the present.
Yoga itself is a meditation in movement, because we are concentrating
on trying to do the poses and movements correctly and follow them
with the correct deep breathing. There is also a sitting meditation
when the body is completely still and without attempt to control
the breathing pattern; one is mentally aware of the natural rhythm
of the breath. Any thoughts that arise during meditation we let
go of and then return our focus gently back to the breath.
YOGA
FOR CHILDREN
Yoga
is a great way for children to develop strong, flexible, healthy
body and mind. Improves their concentration and attention; and cultivates
overall sense of well being.
SASHA
RELJIC is certified Zen Yoga instructor and has been practicing
Yoga since 1987 and teaching since 1993. She has been practicing
Buddhism since 1989 and has been attending meditation retreats with
Ch'an Master Sheng Yen in New York. She has also 10 years experience
(1984-1994) working as a school teacher in an elementary school
when she started teaching yoga to children.
